The 6th Annual Quality of Life in Hampton Roads 2015

Hello Hampton Roads,

The Social Research Center at ODU puts together an annual survey on the Quality of Life in Hampton Roads and I'm happy to report that this year's survey has some good news! The 2015 survey used a sample size of 883 people from the 7 cities (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News),  and the responses were waited to reflect the population and demographics of each city.

Quality of Life
The good news is that the quality of life in Hampton Roads has improved over the past 5 years and 72.9% of the respondents said that the quality of life was excellent or good while 25.8% reported it as fair or poor.  The majority that viewed life in Hampton Roads favorably said it was due to the recreational facilities (likes beaches, parks and museums), good schools, quality health care, job opportunities, and the weather! Those who rated the quality of life poorly based their assessment on crime and transportation challenges.

Respondents were also asked to rate the quality of life in the city where they live and cities where the quality of life was rated as excellent or good from highest to lowest are as follows:

Chesapeake      88.6 %
Virginia Beach  87.8%
Suffolk              76.1%
Hampton           61.9%
Newport News  51.8%
Norfolk              47%
Portsmouth       42.7%

Economic Conditions
In terms of economic conditions, 55% of respondents saw Hampton Roads as good or excellent while 42.8% saw it as fair or poor.

Home Ownership
Lastly it was found that 65.5% of respondents own their home or are in the process of buying a home, 30.6% rent and 3.1% said they had other arrangements. The trend over the last 5 years can be seen in the table below:

Over all the outlook is positive!  If you are interested in learning more and you can view the full survey report here.
