In our society, having credit is a necessity. While it's nice to be able to pay for everything in cash, not many people have the ability to do this. Building great credit can help you in a number of ways and offer a better quality of life by giving you access to things that you need. Things that can make your life better, like buying a home or a car, are are easier to obtain for those with better credit. Having great credit also means that you'll be offered the best interest rates and therefore save money by paying less in fees and financing charges. Building great credit starts with knowing what's on your credit reports, correcting any errors and monitoring your accounts.

Building great credit starts with knowing what's on your credit reports, correcting any errors and monitoring your accounts.
Knowing what's on your credit reports is key and you can get a free copy of your reports from each of the 3 credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Transunion) once every 12 months. You can do this through AnnualCreditReport.com and a good strategy to use would be to request a report every 4 months from one of the 3 bureaus so you can keep track of your credit throughout the year.
Once you get your report, be sure to review it for any errors, for example:
- Is your personal information correct?
- Are the accounts showing yours?
- Are the amounts/balances correct?
- Are any closed accounts still showing as active?
Should you find an error, send a dispute letter along with a copy of your credit report to the credit bureau where the discrepancy shows up. Below is the contact information for each of the 3 credit bureaus for your convenience:
