The New American Home Where Style Meets Substance

Hello Hampton Roads,

The New American Home is the state of the art, centerpiece home of the International Builder's Show; it showcases the latest, most innovative design concepts and construction techniques in the industry today.  Since 1984, one builder, architect and designer are selected to produce the modern home of the year.

This year's home can best be described as Mediterranean Modern and is aptly located in  Monteverde, Florida.

Architect / Builder: Legacy Custom Built Homes, Winter Park, Fla.
Architect: Hyatt Design, Orlando, Fla.
Interior Designer: Homes Re-imagined, Orlando
Landscape Designer: Redmon Design Co., Maitland, Fla.
Lot size: 65,340 square feet
Total area: 10,000 square feet
Living area: 6,533 square feet
Bedrooms: 5    Baths: 6 full, 2 half

This home has many interesting features; it is aesthetically pleasing and highly energy efficient, the ideal blend of style and substance.

Energy efficiency is built in throughout the structure, fom the building envelope to the retractable screens and concrete roof tiles.  The homes has a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) of  46 which is 36% more efficient than the average new-build home.

One of the more attractive features is that house boasts a ducted mini-split system for heating and air conditioning. Instead of having several large heat pumps, this system allows for each room to have its own cassette with shorter ducts which enables better temperature control and more energy efficiency.

Almost every gadget in the home can be controlled wirelessly from a smart phone.

While I appreciate many qualities that this home has to offer,  I don't like everything. For example, the "morning kitchen" in the master bedroom is something I can do without.  This "kitchen" features a sink, coffee maker and microwave--it reminds me too much of a hotel suite!

What are your thoughts about this home?

Thanks for Reading,
